  1.                        ARC <-> LZH version 3.0
  2.  
  3.     I wanted to automate the process of converting my ARC files to the 
  4. new LZH format. So I created this little shell program. I decided that 
  5. others  may  benifit from it's use so,  I decided to release it  as  a 
  6. FREEWARE  program.  It may be distributed FREELY as long as all  files 
  7. remain in the archive.  It is NOT TO BE SOLD or modified. I retain all 
  8. right  to the programs and source code.  I take no responsibility  for 
  9. any damages,  loss of time,  etc. that may result from the use of this 
  10. program. YOU EXCEPT IT AS IS. It does not contain any viruses, etc.

  14.     Start  the program by double-clicking on  ARC2LZH.PRG.  After  the 
  15. ABOUT  ME dialog appears,  just hit return and you will  be  presented 
  16. with the main menu.

  18.     At  the  top  of the dialog box there is  a  Title  bar.  It  will 
  19. have "ARC <-> LZH" in it when you first run the program.  By  clicking 
  20. on  the bar you can switch between "ARC <-> LZH" to "LZH <-> ARC"  and 
  21. back. Version 1.0 only allowed ARC to LZH conversion but, I know there 
  22. are  some  people  out there who still prefer the  ARC  format,  so  I 
  23. decided to add the ability to convert an LZH file to ARC format.

  25. DIRECTORIES AREA:
  26.     This  box  contains  buttons to  change  the  wroking  directories 
  27. without having to go to the Configuration portion of the program.  You 
  28. can change the following directories.

  30.     SOURCE:  This is where your files that you wish to convert to  the 
  31. other format are located. Your ARC or LZH files are located here.
  32.  
  33.     DESTINATION:  This is where the program will place your  converted 
  34. files.
  35.  
  36.     TEMPORARY:  This  is  where  the program  temporarily  stores  the 
  37. extracted files during the conversion process.
  38.  
  39.     EXTRACTED  FILES:  This  is  where  the  program  will  place  the 
  40. extracted files when the 'RETAIN EXTRACTED FILES' option is  selected. 
  41. Further details below.

  43.     CONFIGURATION:  This will bring up a configuration dialog box.  It 
  44. is where you place all the directory path information. Further details 
  45. below.

  48. OPTIONS HEADING:
  49.     Under  the heading you will find several options.  The first  four 
  50. are Radio Buttons or Toggle Switches. The can be toggled on or off.

  52.     PAUSE:  This  selection will make the program pause  between  each 
  53. file  conversion.  You  will  the have the option  of  continuing  the 
  54. program  or  halting  it  and returning to  the  main  menu.  If  this 
  55. selection is off, the program will convert all the specified files non 
  56. stop.

  58.     DELETE  ORIGINAL:  This selection will tell the program to  delete 
  59. the original file.  That is, if you convert an ARC file to a LZH file, 
  60. it will delete the ARC file.  Why have 2 copies of the same file? With 
  61. this selection off, the program will not delete the original file.

  65.     RETAIN DATE:  This selection will allow you to retain the original 
  66. date of creation of the files in the archive. With this selection off, 
  67. the date of the converted files will not be the original file dates. I 
  68. haven't determined what date the converted files will have yet.

  70.     RETAIN  EXTRACTED FILES:  This selection will allow you to  retain 
  71. the  extracted files.  In version 1.0,  the program would extract  the 
  72. files  from the ARC file and place them in the  TEMPORARY  folder.  It 
  73. would then add them to the LZH file and delete the extracted files.  I 
  74. got  tired  of converting the files I downloaded  and  then  un-lzhing 
  75. them.  It  already extracted them once,  why do it  again?  With  this 
  76. option, it will place the extracted files in a folder of the same name 
  77. as the file. It will place the folder and files into the directory you 
  78. choose.  This is where the 'EXTRACTED FILES' directory come  in.  With 
  79. this selection off,  the program will place all the extracted files in 
  80. the TEMPORARY folder and then delete them when the conversion  process 
  81. is complete.

  83.     ACCESSORIES:  This selection will bring up a standard menu bar  in 
  84. which you will have access to your accessories. I wanted to be able to 
  85. get to UIS II.

  87.     FORMAT:  This selection will allow you to format a floppy in drive 
  88. A or B.  You will be given the option of A or B,  Sides 1 or 2, Tracks 
  89. 79 or 80 and Sectors 9 or 10. I have not tested this on 5 1/4" disk.

  91. *** Execute Program ***: This section allows you to choose programs to 
  92. execute from the ARC2LZH Shell such as Arc Shell 2.1B from Charles  F. 
  93. Johnson.  I had planned on building an ARC/LZH Shell into the  program 
  94. but decided to let you choose your own programs to execute.  To add  a 
  95. filename to the field,  just click on the words Primary,  Alternate or 
  96. Other.  This  will bring up a fileselector for you to choose the  path 
  97. and  filename of the program to execute.  To execute  the  file,  just 
  98. click on the path and filename field.  These fields will be saved when 
  99. you do a 'Save Configuration'.

  101. Convert  A  File:  This selection will allow you to convert  a  single 
  102. file.  It  acts the same way as the batch conversion process  but,  it 
  103. only  converts a single file.  It will use all the information in  the 
  104. configuration section and the switches.  It does not however,  use the 
  105. source   directory  information.   You  will  be  presented   with   a 
  106. fileselector  when you choose this option to choose the  filename  you 
  107. want to convert.

  109. ARC/LZH OPTINS HEADING:
  110.     Under this heading you will find several options for listing  your 
  111. ARC or LZH files and testing them.

  113.     VERBOSE ARC: This selection allows you to get a verbose listing of 
  114.     an ARC file.

  116.     SHORT ARC:  This selection allows you to get a short listing of an 
  117.     ARC file.

  119.     TEST ARC:  This selection will allow you to test the integrity  of 
  120.     an ARC file.

  122.     VERBOSE LZH: This selection allows you to get a verbose listing of 
  123.     a LZH file.

  125.     SHORT LZH:  This selection allows you to get a short listing of  a 
  126.     LZH file.

  128.     TEST LZH: This selection will allow you to test the integrity of a 
  129.     LZH file.

  132.     This  button  will just bring up the About Me dialog  box.  It  is 
  133. located under the Directories Area.

  136. SFX CREATE:
  137.     This selection will allow you to select an LZH file to convert  to 
  138. a Self-EXtraction LZH file.  You must have the program SFX_LZH.PRG  in 
  139. order to do this.  It is available on GEnie,  other services and  most 
  140. major BBS's. This button is located under the Info button.

  145. SFX REMOVE:
  146.     This  selection  will allow you to convert a  Self-EXtracting  LZH 
  147. file   into  a  normal  LZH  file.   You  will  need  a  file   called 
  148. DESELF.PRG (TTP) in order to do this.  It is also available on  GEnie, 
  149. other services and most major BBS's.  This button is located under the 
  150. ARC/LZH Area.

  153. CONVERT:
  154.     This button will start the conversion process.

  156. SAVE CONFIGURATION:
  157.     This  will save all the directory information,  the status of  the 
  158. four  Radio Buttons (Pause,  Delete Original,  Retain Date and  Retain 
  159. Extracted files) and the mode you are in (ARC <-> LZH or LZH <->  ARC) 
  160. so that the next time you boot the program, the defaults will be set.

  162. EXIT:
  163.    Exit out of the program.

  166.     When  you select the Configuration button,  you will be  presented 
  167. with a section in which you can enter the directory path's for all the 
  168. functions. You can either type them in or click on the title (the area 
  169. that has the fill pattern in it).  If you click on this area, you will 
  170. be  presented with a fileselector to choose your path's.  Also in  the 
  171. main  menu,  you can change the  Source,  Destination,  Temporary  and 
  172. Extracted Files directories. Select EXIT when you are finished.

  174.     If  you  start the conversion process and the program  starts  but 
  175. then  returns to the main menu without seeming to do  anything,  start 
  176. checking  around.  Look at the Configuration area and see if you  have 
  177. everything set up right.  This has happened to me once in awhile and I 
  178. don't know why.  Just exit out of the program and re-run it.  That has 
  179. cleared up the glitch for me everyt
